ShnUpdate - Savyon 20.09.18

We are now in a weird kind of limbo in between holidays - Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur have passed, but Sukkot and Simchat Torah are just around the corner. It feels like, together, over the last week or so, Savyon has been around most of Israel. This tale of adventure starts last Thursday. Six of us went down to Caesarea, a beautiful town on Israel’s central coast. Thanks to the hospitality of Nathan’s very generous grandparents, we were able to camp the the private beach of Kibbutz Sdot Yam, which manages to be even more beautiful than Caesaria itself. Shana tova to all!! This week, our kvutzah spent all of two days together as a result of the absolute balagan that is the month of Tishri in the Jewish calendar. Don’t get me wrong - I’m not complaining(!) - but it has left me with a bit of lack of content to fill this weekly update with, so bare with me… Last Thursday, we all spent the day at an Ahmadiyya Mosque here in Haifa, courtesy of Jess. Most of us hadn’t had many in-person interactions with Islam, so being guided around by one of the community members as well as getting to watch men from the community engage in prayer was a really eye-opening experience. ShnUpdate - Savyon 06.09.18

This past week has been quite different compared to previous weeks of Shnat, as we as a kvutzah could not be more thrilled to be re-united with Tahlia and Sal. Upon their return we had a highly relaxing weekend of rest before jumping into our busy week. Because the organization Michael and I have been volunteering at has taken their participants to Greece for the week (cough cough, would have liked an invite, cough cough) we had our compass’ set on new volunteering locations for the week. Michael volunteered at our local thrift shop, where he left with a full stomach of food, and a pair of crocs (still on the fence as to whether that was a good idea….).
